am trying to configure a Voice gateway AS5400 to route call from ISDN E1 to to a SIP server, I have configured the dial-peers , but when I try to make a call form , I hear noise like a modem voice I have been reading on Cisco website on this problem and they said all you need is to add the command “incoming called-number .” but still I am hearing the same noise

ISDN E1———->AS5400 Voice Gateway ————–>SIP Server

if you guys can take a look at it and see if I did something wrong.

    you help is highly appreciated

NO you can’t use 7940 as PSTN phone. It has to register to the CUCM, which will assign it a DN.

The best way to do a PSTN phone is to buy a $10 analog phone and plug it into a router. You can get any analog phone, try a thrift store. Check ebay and get yourself a MC3810 with a few FXS ports. You will need 1 FXS port per phone.

I would not use a 7940, but you can.

I have a 3640 (3x HD-2VEs + old CME) setup as my PSTN switch and use a 7960 for the PSTN phones.
My reason for the 7960s is the additional line buttons.

    Hope that helps.

I use a 3640 for my PSTN router (running old version of CME) with 2x NM-HD-2VEs (Cheap on ebay, if there is such a thing on the CCIE Voice track), then add the vwic-1mft-t1 or e1 as needed. Good news is that the 2VE has plenty of DSPs on it.

I think better use the CIPC instead of 7940 as it has only 2 lines, or use 3×7940 is u have.
